Welcome to the J. James Fahey Farewell Blog
Jim will retire from Marist at the end of the spring 2010 semester after teaching here for 25 years. Jim retired from IBM in 1990, after 28 years of service, as manager of communication and community relations in Poughkeepsie. During his time with IBM he taught as an adjunct instructor in Marist's undergraduate communication program from 1985 until he assumed his current full-time position as associate professor of communication at Marist.
As a member of the Marist faculty, Jim taught courses in public speaking, public relations, and organizational communication. Since he taught all sections of the mandatory public relations course in the public relations/organizational communication sequence, almost every student who graduated from Marist with a concentration in public relations over the last two decades has enjoyed Jim's classes. All together, Jim's grade books (yes, he kept every one!) indicate that Jim taught approximately 4,000 students at Marist.
Those who know Jim have come to love and respect his immaculate appearance (coat and tie, every day), his warm smile and sense of humor, his infinite supply of stories and anecdotes from the public relations field, his professional advice, and his caring attitude for students. Ask Jim, though, how he would like to be remembered and he will tell you, "Tough but fair!"
We will miss Jim on campus but I'm sure we will continue to hear from him and see him at Marist sporting events and reunions for many years to come as he continues to mentor us and offer advice. We hope that many of Jim's friends, colleagues, and current and former students will attend the April 30 farewell. If you plan to attend, please send an e-mail message to faheyfarewell@gmail.com or click here to contact the School of Communication and the Arts front office. Provide your name, telephone number, and e-mail address and we will send you an invitation with information about the event.
Please honor Jim as he approaches retirement and help us make his send-off special by contributing a few memories (new posts, comments, letters, photos, voice messages, stories, etc.) on this blog -- just click the appropriate pages. You can select from the following pages that have links at the top of this page: Jim's Photo Pages, Jim'sTestimonials, and Jim's Social Media Page.
Thank you,
Mark A. Van Dyke
